Red face taking a local backup of mail on IMAP server?

    hi,

i have a large amount of email stored on our hosting's IMAP mail server. i'd like to make a local copy before moving away from that hosting.

i thought about using imapsync for that but I don't have a local IMAP server running. In the past I used to do a tar.gz of the IMAP mail folder (Maildir? they are running courier-imap). But that doesn't work anymore because I can't access those folders now.

any ideas what tool works well and that would let me eventually upload the mail somewhere else if i need it again?

    thanks
    bert

thanks. i already know about this, it's not what I'm looking for because I want to automate the backups every night. I tried the above method and it's not reliable and there is no easy way to see the progress of the total backup, etc.
