    [SOLVED] mailq: lookup (host.ie): deferred

    Hello,

I am almost a complete newbie about sendmail. We are having some reports from the hosting service that the queue of mails is too high. So, i run this command on the server:

    mailq | wc

    It shows:

    80181 348228 3831348

Is that "80181" in queue normal? (I mean, do I have to worry about?)

Then I run: (as suggested in: The Art of Web ~ Analysing mailq and the mqueue directory )

    mailq | grep " (" | sed 's/\(8BITMIME\| 7BIT\)/ /' | sort | uniq -c

    It shows:

    1 /var/spool/mqueue (26745 requests)

We own the "web21.co.jp" domain name. That domain was hosted once in that server but now we don't use it anymore. We removed everything we found about it in the server and even we changed the NS information so it "technically" never reach the server.

Last week we clean-up the mail queue but still the queue is filled with mails trying to reach web21.co.jp.

Why this could happen? is there any user misusing the service (if so, how can I know)?

How can I get rid of this problem?

I checked the /etc/resolv.conf (because I read that it may be related) and it only contains "0.0.0.0". It is a shared hosting so I'm not sure why this value is written. However in general the rest of the emails seems to be send as normal.

    Any ideas? I'm lost

    Thank you!

    Question

    Thank you davidanand...
Since it is a shared server, and we don't have root access, I think we can't do so much...
I gave up already... The problem is that every time we clean-up the queue we have to pay... I thought that maybe someone was using a SMTP account to send SPAM, but I'm not sure if that is the reason or not.

If I try to check the MX records (at a online free service) it displays:
" Sorry, we could not find a namesever for 'web21.co.jp' "

    using dig:
    ; <<>> DiG 9.5.0-P2 <<>> web21.co.jp
    ;; global options: printcmd
    ;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 56174
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;web21.co.jp. IN A

    ;; Query time: 68 msec
    ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 29

So, even the status is "SERVFAIL" will still be looping in the queue?

you can always ask your web host to add spf record to your domain and
put some RBLS that might fix your issue

    [solved]

    Thank you davidanand!
I will follow also your suggestion.

After talking with my web host, they gave me access to the mail queue, so what I did was to delete all mails in queue that had that domain name in it and also others that had more than 3 days there...

With that, the queue went down to 100 mails... still I have to delete some of them...

    Thank you!
