    Try to execute as the root-user

    Code:
    mysql -A <databasename>
    Then set a password for a localuser to the specific database, like this

    Code:
    grant all on <databasename>.* to <localuser>@localhost identified by '<password>';
    Then you will be able to access the database as the localuser and the password.

    regards

    Code:
    WITH GRANT OPTION
    I suggest you using that option or you won't be able to set an grants for any other user with root which would be very bad.
