I was thinking about getting a Linux VPS to mess around in, something so that I can learn the ins and outs of running a simple server. In the long run, I'd want to install Diaspora on it, and run a node for my friends, but right now I just want to have a bit of a play

Does anyone have any recommendations for (preferably UK-based) hosting, or any advice on how to get started?
And, for that matter, if I can get a static IP from my ISP, would it be better to go for a VPS or use an old machine (of which I have plenty)?
Thanks
