    Question Debian Squeeze - Won't start without monitor


    Hello everyone,

    When I run Debian without a monitor it won't respond to ping, vnc or anything else. I already tried the bios which isn't the problem. Another computer where my earlier firewall distro's were on and where I did the same worked. I put the HDD in that computer and still had the same problem so I think there is a problem within Debian. I also use a minimal install of the gnome GUI.

    Does anyone know what the problem is?

    Verify iptables

    One thing you could do is to verify if iptables (firewall rules) are running on your machine

    Code:
    iptables -L -n --line-numbers | more
    If you see line items, we could do one of three things, we could add an line item to allow icmp packets, we could remove the firewall rules all together or modify a rule (we need the rules to do that -

     iptables-save > iptables.rul

    add rule - example below
    
    iptables -I INPUT 1 -p icmp -s 192.168.0.0/16 -d 192.168.0.0/16 -j ACCEPT
    or 
    iptables -I INPUT 1 -p icmp -j ACCEPT
    iptables -I INPUT 2 -p tcp -m multiport --dport 5800,5900 -s 192.168.0.0/16 -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

    remove ip tables - the F flushes it and Z zeros the count
    
    iptables -F && iptables Z

    iptables-save > iptables.rul - extracts rules to a file
    Cut and paste what is in the iptables.rul document.

    Well, the first thing we need to do is to verify if something is blocking the network traffic.

    You can verify that by extracting information from the server (based on what you gave me), it sounds like the firewall is activating every time you bring up the machine, I cannot say for certain, we are only guessing at this point.

    If you can provide more information, then we can narrow down the problem.

    This is what I have tdsan when I did iptables-save > iptables.rul. I also use Shorewall to edit the iptables.

    Thank you for your reply elija. When the monitor is attached to the pc and the only thing I do is boot the pc I can ping it and even make a vnc connection, but when it hasn't got a monitor attached it doesn't work. The monitor is VGA if it makes a difference, but I don't have to be logged on.

    Ok, I see the rules are not active, so that is a good thing.

    And no, you don't have to be logged in, but it would be good to see messages on the screen when the computer comes up. I think in order to diagnose the problem, we need to see if there are any problems or errors that come up on the screen.

    Can you run dmesg to see if there are any problems?

    This maybe sounds silly, but do you have to take any actions in order that this computer boots up when a monitor is attached (like hitting <enter> or something else)?

    Can you describe what happens when you attach the vga monitor and boot the computer?

    Does this computer automatically go into sleep/standby after some time?

    Hello Kloschüssel and thank you for your reply,

    The steps it makes when the computer starts with the vga monitor attached to it:
    1. bios
    2. grub
    3. login screen
    None of these steps need interaction by me. I already tested it without doing anything and it went all the way to the login screen. When the login screen showed up I tried a ping which worked. After this test I did the same thing but know without the vga monitor and I couldn't ping it or use any of the other functions which should work right away like ssh. I'm really confused right now. I have done this with Debian Lenny without any problem but Squeeze is slightly different.
