apache - fatal error - unable to change to uid: 48

    hi friends,

there has been a increase in my clients server's traffic and its causing apache to stop exit:

    Code:
[Sun Feb 26 14:39:34 2012] [alert] (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 48
[Sun Feb 26 14:39:34 2012] [alert] (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 48
[Sun Feb 26 14:39:34 2012] [alert] (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 48
[Sun Feb 26 14:39:34 2012] [alert] (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 48
[Sun Feb 26 14:39:35 2012] [alert] Child 22405 returned a Fatal error... Apache is exiting!
ive been researching it for the past 6 hours or so and everything leads to the fix being "ulimit -n 9999 && ulimit -u 9999"

On a dedicated server, do you think it's bad to have "open files" and "max user processes" to unlimited?

also, can/will these ever exceed MaxClients? for example, hypothetically lets say you have 1,000 people connected to the server...will apache ever need more than 1,000 file descriptors and/or user processes open for these 1,000 connections?

    thanks in advance

    ps....
    Code:
    # lsof | grep httpd | wc -l
    137101

    #lsof | grep apache | wc -l
    125979
