Joining ubuntu web server to a Windows domain

I have built a virtual network for training purposes, it is made up of a Windows 2003 server, Ubuntu web server and a XP professional client using VMware player. I have assigned each machine a static IP address and used NAT for network settings.

They can all ping each other.

After installing Likewise Open on the web server I am having trouble joining my windows domain, contoso.com.

    I get the error message

    Error DNS_ERROR_BAD_PACKET [code :0x0000251e]

I've tried searching online for a solution but get no where.

    Any suggestions .

is the firewall off on both sides (DC and Ubuntu box)?

When you say you can ping each other, are you pinging by hostname?

The firewall is turned off on the DC & the iptables with ubuntu are default. From what I read does that not mean that it has no rules so nothing is being filtered?

I am able to ping each machine using the each machine on the network individual ip address.

When I try to ping each machine using the hostname, windows reports that it can not find the hostname ubuntu.

Can you post your iptables configuration?
    Code:
    iptables -nL
Also, how are you trying to join the domain? What is it that you are actually doing?

I installed Likewise & when I run the command, sudo domainjoin-cli join contoso.com Administrator.

I put in my password after being prompted for it and I get this message

    Error DNS_ERROR_BAD_PACKET

A bad packet was recieved from a DNS server. Potentially the requested address does not exist.

    Here are my iptables configurations,

    Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

    Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

    Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

The problem is that your ubuntu server doesn't know anything about the contoso.com domain.

If you are running a DNS server in the domain, you could point the ubuntu box to that DNS server.

I don't have a ubuntu box handy but I think if you edit your /etc/resolv.conf file like below, you should be ok.

    Code:
    search contoso.com
    nameserver dnsserveripaddress
You will probably need to install the Microsoft services for unix extension to you AD box too.
