    Java port 8080 is closed and listening

    Hello,

    I needed to connect to from our jboss website to one of our provider website.it works fine on other 3 servers but it doesn't work on one of the server for port 8080.it works for internal servers and local host but not with external connections.

    eg:
    # telnet xyzIP 8080
    Trying xyzIP...
    telnet: connect to address xyzIP: Connection refused
    telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

    $ nc -vz xyzIP 8080
    xyzIP: inverse host lookup failed: Unknown host
    (UNKNOWN) [xyzIP] 8080 (webcache) : Connection refused

    when i try to list the port it is saying it's listening:
    $ netstat -an | grep LISTEN | grep tcp

    tcp 0 0 :::8080 :::* LISTEN

    when i am checking outgoing port it is saying it's closed:
    # nmap -sV xyzIP -p 8080
    PORT STATE SERVICE VERSION
    8080/tcp closed http-proxy

    I have checked there is no issue with firewall and it works for all other server.

    thanks for your help in advance

    Dig can't resolve the address - there's no answer section. Are you able to get to any external address from the server?

    Thank you for your reply gregm,

    no i cant get to any external address from the server all says connection refused for port 8080.it works without port though.But i needed to work for port 8080 because jboss application on server is on this port.

    eg:
    [root@www1 /]# telnet yahoo.com 8080
    Trying 206.190.36.45...
    telnet: connect to address 206.190.36.45: Connection refused
    Trying 98.138.253.109...
    telnet: connect to address 98.138.253.109: Connection refused
    Trying 98.139.183.24...
    telnet: connect to address 98.139.183.24: Connection refused
    telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

    That doesn't seem like a very good test. I don't think yahoo is listening on 8080.

    What proxy server are you using? I think you'll need to post some information on how it's configured. Have you compared the server that's not working to one that is?

    I am not using any proxy server. i did compare a servers with working servers.

    eg:This is how it look for working servers

    $ telnet portquiz.net 8080
    Trying 178.33.250.62...
    Connected to portquiz.net (178.33.250.62).
    Escape character is '^]'.
    Connection closed by foreign host.

    $ nc -v portquiz.net 8080
    Connection to portquiz.net 8080 port [tcp/webcache] succeeded!

    $ curl portquiz.net:8080
    Port 8080 test successful!
    Your IP: xyz

    $ wget portquiz.net:8080
    Resolving portquiz.net... 178.33.250.62
    Connecting to portquiz.net|178.33.250.62|:8080... connected.

    You can connect to portquiz.net:80 but not portquiz.net:8080? Are you filtering outgoing ports? i.e. iptables?
