DNS - configuration not clear on use - router - linux box?

Would like to have a DNS for the local LAN. I have the router (Linksys AC1200, also known as an EA6100) that does the automatic IP's for the LAN. If I make one of the Linux boxes the DNS box, how does it know what IP the router issued? Some kind of call to it? Is this even possible, do I need to use some other method or just go to static IP's?

Or is this back to the reason that there are sites like NOIP out there?

I prefer dynamic, for no reason, but would like to hear how this should be handled. My printer is a static IP as are a couple of other items, but most of it get a new IP on restart or power fail.
