well disk space isnt really this issue, with fedora core you have so much stuff running that you don't need for a server, it is bad for preformance and bad for security. cutting it down to somthing like gentoo (where you compile from scratch) would take longer than just installing gentoo, and gentoo will do exactly what you want, and only what you want

you can turn off the services you don't need. FC3 on my P2-400 with only the essential services running runs at about the same speed as the FC3 full install with a lot turned on on my P4-3GHz
