First of all, make sure that your Apache and core libraries are up-to-date. Also close all the services that you don't really need.

Even though people are more or less paranoid about firewalling, I'm running a server that is up against the Internet 24/7 without a firewall, and it has been only been cracked two times, essentially. Once it was rooted, but I fixed that and upgraded the kernel (it was running 2.4.2 before) to remove the ptrace bug that enabled it. The other time it was cracked through a bug in OpenSSL that was exploitable through Apache.
So in my experience, for a home server that is only moderately attacked, a firewall is on the verge of being overkill.
