Is it true that SLES 9 has to be available for download for free just like other versions

Does anyone know whether they have deals for students or know of somewhere that will sell SLES9 and Novell linux desktop at a reduced price for students who have intent to learn. Its not like i wont buy a proper full copy when i have the money its just hard to learn when you cant afford the product in the first place.
