ERROR 2002: CAn't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysqld.sock' (111)

trying to start a mythfrontend but I can't connect to the database, and mythfrontend fails. I also get the above error when I type "mysql" at the root prompt.

I'm pretty dumb but I could sure use the help.

Is MySQL actually running on your box? You should get something returned if you type this at a konsole:

    Code:
    ps -e |grep mysql
Also did you complie it yourself or was it pre-installed on your distro?

Kust an idea .. but you could try knoppmyth instead, all the myth programs and prerequisite applications running on a knoppix live cd. Gentoo has a reputation for being difficult to configure ....
