GFI Languard can scan your network for missing windows patches then allow you to deploy them afterwards. I do not believe this solution requires a windows server to run on, it will run from a windows workstation.
I personally prefer Shavliks HfNetCheckPro running on a windows 2000 server, it makes short work of scanning the network patching and pulling reports. it's also reasonably priced. and no agents are required on teh workstations to be patched. http://www.shavlik.com/hfnetchk-windows.aspx
If you are set on a solution you can run from Linux to patch windows.. take a look at Zenworks http://www.novell.com/products/zenworks/sysreqs.html
Theres plenty of other players for windows patching in the market as well... agent based, agentless, etc.. etc..
the money your company will save in patch management shouldn't come up front in the server or licensing required but will come on the back end from saved resources because the process is automated. but at the same time you shouldn't have to spend a fortune to get centrally managed patching enabled.far...out

I don't know that autopatcher fits the criteria, it's not a patch distribution system it's a CD with all the patches on it and an application to install them on a single PC locally. he would have to take it to every machine install the autopatcher app an then run it to install the updates.. It is handy for when you do service calls though.

Ok for a coupole machiens but I wouldn't want to do it that way in my environment. and it''s certainly not a centralized management for patching.far...out

as stated above Rcouts dose not want to pay for a windows license, the license for zen networks is alot plus it only works with active directory and novell directory.
