help with setup for samba
ok i am trying to get a small server on in my house (so small) and i read a web page and tryed seting it up then i went on a different computer and did the run then \\linuxserver.ex.org and it came up with the login but it had under user bob/guest and i could not change it i tryed all different passwords but nothing. is some one knows what is wrong please tell me. thanks

You have to either convert all of your Linux user accounts to Samba users or create individual Samba accounts for access to SMB shares.

I am assuming that the computer you tried the //linuxserver ... stuff is running Windows. You need to make sure that the user "bob" is a valid user on the server i.e. you can login as bob on the server.
Now what you need to do is execute this command on the server so that bob has a samba password:
once you hit enter, it will prompt for a samba password for bob. Now from the windows computer try logging in with the user bob and the samba password.Code:smbpasswd -a bob

i still cant i tryed everything but it is not that problem i cant change the user name in the run linuxserver... it blockes me from changing and i still cant login. plese help

is there any particular reason you want to change the username? Which OS are you trying this from when you get the problem?

from xp home. maby i am doing it wrong. does some one know a step by step guied that is easy to follow? thanks

from the windows i got on in linux by the test but i cant find what "web" page to go to so like run: \\linuxserver... but i tryed every thing i tryed to go on to my network, my workgroop and hit the server but i do not have permition.
