    The standard place to look is bind9.net, who have plenty of documentation on this subject.

    Setting up a dns server is relatively straightforward, and you can learn plenty as a new user configuring it. For a lan of 40 computers, it should be pretty useful.

    One word of warning, dont open your DNS server to the internet, it's a bit of a security hole. There are ways to run it in a chroot jail, or my personal favourite would be to stick it on an old PC with the DHCP server and no user accounts.
