looking for a powerful distro for Asterisk PBX

I want to build a PBX (Private Branch eXchange) from a PC.
I will be using Asterisk PBX. You can learn more about it here, http://www.asterisk.org
I am looking for a very stable and powerful distrobution. Ease of install is not important but preferred. But ease of maintanance is very important. The kernal must be at least 2.4.
This server will not be used for anything else, just the phone system.
    Hardware specs:
    Intel Celeron 700
    512 M Ram
    40 Gig HD IDE
    Or:
    Intel PII 600
    512 M Ram
    40 Gig HD IDE

    Thank you.

if ease of installation dont matter i recommend gentoo which has no installer you compile everything from scratch or you can use binaries they give you but if you compile you will have a completely optimized system. the next distro i would recommend if you dont want to go with gentoo would have to be slackware 9.1

    www.gentoo.org
    www.slackware.com

    hope this helps

how much of a pain is it to install the Gentoo? I have only a smattering of Linux experience. Enough to get the job done and hold my own, but i am by no means a guru.
Do you think Slackware is better than Redhat 9? why?
