Gcc!
I assume, since you mention "compiling", that you are using a source-based version of Samba, and not a ready binary.
If you are going to compile Samba then YES you need gcc.
You will also need other various libraries.
And gcc is easily downloadable from www.gnu.org or whichever linux distribution site you prefer. If you want more help, I suggest you post error messages and info about what happens when you try to install samba.

Why not google for a samba rpm?
Would be much better than source.
Or use your install CDs to put an older version of samba on.No trees were harmed during the creation of this message. Its made from a blend of elephant tusk and dolphin meat.
