apache permissions problems

Hello,
I'm having problems with my apache server, in that it won't let me browse to a new picture myphoto1.jpg that I've put in /var/www/html/mydir (http://myserver/mydir/myphoto1.jpg returns 403 forbidden).

I don't understand why it's doing this because it is happy to serve up an existing photo which has exactly the same permissions, -rwxr-xr-x, and the same owner (my normal user account, not root).
why is it refusing to serve up this new picture?

the picture problem is something to do with the picture file itself, rather than its name - as I renamed it to the name of an existing file and it let me view the picture with that name then (even though it was the old picture.)
The picture was saved by The GIMP, could that have anything to do with it? although I can't see how as its permissions and ownership are exactly the same as the existing pictures.

I haven't changed my httpd.conf from standard but it is as follows (comments removed)
