How do i set Samba to get user account information from a domain in smb.conf?

By right, it gets it's user account info locally from the system that samba is installed on using a smbpasswd backend right? Which means i'll have to add user accounts to the smbpasswd backend?

If i'm using linux\samba via vmware player, it should be no different right?
