    plz send
    can NFS be used for sharing files between linux and windows??
    can we and should we use both samba and FTP simultaneously?

    NFS is used for *nix to *nix. (Network File System)
    Use Samba to connect to and from windows machines.

    Depends on what you want to do, they don't harm each other, thats up to you.

    Hi,


    NFS is used only for sharing the files between the UNIX based systems.SAMBA is the available service helps to share the files between the Linux and windows.And FTP is also working in the same machine......

    it cleared my doubts.....but i suppose i read somewhere that NFS can be used for sharing files between windows and linux....are u sure?? i may be mistaken!!
    also tell me , wats the point in using samba and FTP simultaneously?? wats the benefit in that??

    No you canīt use nfs for sharing files between windows and *ux boxes what i know. For that you have to use Samba as the guys above are saying.

    FTP is used for transfer files between systems from commandline or thru a gui program, samba is sharing for example a directory that you can mount and access from Windows boxes.

    Ftp and samba are 2 different applications that have no strings attached between them, therefore you can use them both or just one of them if you like.

    Instead of FTP you should use Sftp or Scp instead that are using encryption of the data stream. Thats more secure and are a better solution, all program mentioned above are normaly shipped in the most linux distributions.
