Forbidden

I have just installed Ubuntu server 7.04 and I am having problems with the permissions? I have changed the DocumentRoot in the /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-Default to "/home/jeff/public_html" but I am getting "Forbidden - You don't have permission to access this server" when I open up Firefox/IE to test. I have used the chmod command and +'d rwx for ugo for the directories/file (/home, /jeff, /public_html, test.html) with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

Shouldn't that be 755? You don't want to give others write permission. You can do this by running

chmod 755 /jeff

And so on for the others. Is your 'jeff' folder on the root partition?

I have tried switching to 777 and 775 for the following:

/etc
/etc/apache2
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default (This is where I changed the DocumentRoot to /home/jeff/public_html")
/home
/home/jeff
/home/jeff/public_html
/home/jeff/public_html/test.html (Test page I created with front page)

I have stoped thae apache2 process and started and I am still getting the page "403 Forbidden - You don't have permission to access / on this server" page. Any other ideas?

It seems like something else has gone wrong, but I'm not sure what.....

From the same computer as you're running your server, what happens when you type "localhost" in the address bar of your browser. Also, try "127.0.0.1".

I have tried typing "localhost" and "127.0.0.1" directly on the Ubuntu box and I still run into the same Forbidden msg using Firefox.

Are there any error messages reported when you start Apache? Are their any messages in /var/log/apache2/access_log or /var/log/apache2/error_log?
