Apache hosting problem
Hi, I'm trying to host a website using apache from my fedora linux machine. I have my router configured properly to do this. When I eneter the ip address of my router into a web browser from my lan or wan the website works. But when I try to access the ip elsewhere it says connection timed out, (it doesn't work) I can't figure out why I can't access my site through the internet. Could my ISP be preventing me?
Could be. I got the same kind of result when I tried hosting a personal site. My ISP blocks port 80. So I tried port 8080, and that worked until they caught on and blocked that one too.
I see...Cox cable is my ISP. Why do they block you? Is it against the rules to host your own personal website?
ISP's generally block port 80 because they want you to pay them to host your site for you, that's the only real reason for it.
Like Zelmo says though you can sometimes get around that by using port 8080, or contact your ISP and ask if they can unblock port 80... sometimes you get lucky and they will.
