Could anyone help me with how i go to work on setting up m mail server with suse 9.2. I have a small company and they would like to have a linux box as there mail server . I had little trainnig in linux and cant remember what and how to set this server up. what is better sendmail or postfix and what else is needed.
would realy be helpfull Anyone

SuSE uses postfix by default, and most of the mailserver admins I've run into prefer postfix, so that shouldn't really be much of an issue. Postfix and sendmail, of course, only really send mail, so you'll want to look into something that lets you receive mail like courier or qmail. Quick tangent question...you say that sendmail only lets you "send" mail. On my setup, slackware 10.1, I am receiving mail and the only thing I did (besides some DNS MX settings) was uncomment a couple lines for pop and imap from my inetd configuration script.
If that is the case, what program am I using to receive mail?
The clients want to able to send and receive email. They are running on a domain. Maybe this helps making things clear. but i will try the link. The thing is i dont know where to start at all. It gone take lots of work and internet standby.
If you have anymore info pls would help alot.
Also what do i do about a firewall. do you guy's have something on how to set that up as well. pls
Hi, I was reading your posts and it seems to me that you should start to read more about IP networking.
I can recommend you the same steps I have followed last years. First and the most important to me is reading good documentatio, for that you have http://oreilly.com/. You need to know the DNS operation to be able to set up good IP services, the DNS is the basis for everything. The www.ltsp.org/ site can also help you on this.
You need to try before apply, to read before start and never stop...
Just my simple recommendations based on same experiences.
SuSE 9.2 comes with a firewall installed and enabled by default. You can configure it rather easily within YaST.Quote:

SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (or Send Mail To People :wink:). It's an MTA (Mail Transfer Agent). Postfix both sends and receives mail. To serve the mail for retreival or viewing, however, you need something like POP or IMAP. 8)Quote:

I know this isn't my post, but I am still confused on this piece. The only thing I did on my slackware system was add an MX recond on my DNS server and I was able to send and receive mail (with only sendmail running, as far as I know). Sending I understand, but based on what several posts are saying or implying, I would need some other service running on my slack box in order to receive email...
Now, the client I have used at home is PINE, but I doubt that makes any difference...
