Linux Webserver using Apache HELP!

As an end of the year project, me and two other friends need to create a Linux Webserver using Apache..

We have an idea of what we have to do but we're nubs with this stuff.

Basically this is what we think we need to do:

1. Download Linux on an empty computer (we were thinking Damn Small Linux)
2. Download Apache on the it
3. Then set it up using tutorials because we have no idea of anything..

Could some of you people please fix up the steps^ and lead us in the right direction like which Linux would best suit us and how to set things up or tutorials or anything like that?

Remember, we are TOTAL nubs at this stuff for the most part so keep that in mind if you're explaining something.

I would say your first step would be to check out these sites (and others) to see what is available in Linux:

Most major Linux distributions come with Apache2. All you have to do is google apache web server and you will find more documentation and tutorials than you can possibly read.

Is it necessary webserver with apache? Coz, I think DSL already got Monkey.

BTW, download Apache only is not complete, you must know how to install & activate the apache-x.x.x.dsl package then configure it. Most of apache pakcages in DSL come without extra apache module such as ajp & proxy. So, u may need to recompile apache from source if you need those extra module.

I would just get a net install of Debian. There are all those "the perfect setup" tutorials for Debian. Then it'll be a piece of cake after 30 seconds of Googling.

We need to set the webserver on Apache so will those tutorials be good with Apache or what??

On the Debian network download page it lists [alpha] [amd64] [arm] [hppa] [i386] [ia64] [mips] [mipsel] [powerpc] [sparc] .. I don't know which one to pick

Also, we aren't using Damn Small Linux.

Now we're thinking about Slax?

if you don't know which one to pick then its probably i386 :)

debian will be your best bet for what sounds like a school project :shock:

Are there any distros that already have apache on it so we would just need to set things up? That would be WAY easier..

Debian does have it I think, if it doesnt its easy enough to just go into the package manager and install it from there.
