This mail you see in /var/spool/mail/root, is it the same message you sent or is it a failure message forwarded to root ?
no It's not a failure message ...the same message which i sent to my gmail id.
I think It's gets some how redirected to my root itself..any idea why this happens?
Don't remember the postfix configuration files at the moment.
Check the contents of /etc/postfix/canonical for any canonical redirections.
I don't use Fedora, so I cannot give you Fedora specific instructions. Run the postfix daemon in verbose mode (-v switch) and check your postfix logs. You surely can find a clue that will lead you to the cause of redirection.
If you're using smtpd, you can edit the file /etc/postfix/master.cf and locate the line that starts with smtp. Append -vv to the line (after the word smtpd to be precise). This will make smtpd ouput verbose messages to the log. You can increase the number of 'v's to increase the verbosity.
unfortunely i'm running sendmail on FC4 and not postfix :(
Check if sendmail service is started. It needs to be running.
This i how i sent a mail,
You see sytem generated messages after EOT.
And when i type cat this what i see....Code:[root@localhost ~]# mail -iInv -s hi lakshmipathi.g@gmail.com

Any clues?
I'm with this stuff for a week now ....
Just now i noticed ,
have close look at /var/spool/mail/root
Its says something like,
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
lakshmipathi.g@gmail.com
(reason: 553 5.5.4 <root@localhost.localdomain>... Real domain name required for sender address)
(expanded from: lakshmipathi.g@gmail.com
what's this mean????????????
Not sure what that permanent error means. I guess it sends the mail to root if it cannot send it to the original address after certain period of time. I remember I had problems sending mail from FC4, but then I found that sendmail was stopped. I had to start it manually.
and if it says:Code:/sbin/service sendmail status
start it:Code:sendmail is stopped
then try to send it this way:Code:/sbin/service sendmail start
Code:echo "testing mail" | mail -s "test" lakshmipathi.g@gmail.com
hi,
i checked the status but it says,
sendmail running
any domains problem...do i need to include gmail.com to any of my /etc files.
my hostname is,
localhost.localdomain
