you can make it so only you can see it. To do this you need to install and set up the name server daemon called BIND (there are other implimentations, but BIND is the most used). There is a big howto on linuxdoc.org that shows how to set up a good name services daemon, that holds a lot more information than I do, and what you are asking is very complex. I suggest you read that, and I would be more than happy to assist with any questions you have about it.
Before you get all excited note this part:
That means only your computer (or any other using your DNS server) will be able to see it - so you can go to www.something.com and get your website, but I could not.Quote:

Easier then bind would be to add it to your hosts file, but for multiple machines this can get to be more trouble then DNS after all
maybe its just me....but the hyperlink to www.something.com worked....it went to a website that simply said "something.". Maybe I'm incredibly dumb....but why did that work?
Probably because someone has registered something.com and put up a HTTP server there returning a HTML page saying "Something".
probably? can you think of another solution Dolda? ;-)
maybe internet explorer and netscape have default "www.something.com" hardcoded into the source. HAHAHA
