O/S partitioning scheme for Oracle 10g on RHEL Linux AS3 ( post #1)
We'll soon be installing RHEL Linux AS3 on a server that will function
as an Oracle 10G backend database server. This server may, in the future, have the Oracle app. server moved onto it, as well, but it will not have any other function and it will not house user accounts. The server has four Xeon 2.8 GHz cpu's and 4GB of RAM. There are two sets of 36GB drives that are set up as hardware RAID 1 sets--one set for the operating system and one set for the transaction logs. Additionally, there are eight 73 GB hard drives that will be used in the migration and testing of the existing Oracle database (some of these drives can be used to augment the LVM partitions of the O/S and for any additional space Oracle may require), which currently resides on a Windows server. I have read two helpful articles regarding installing Oracle 10G on RHEL AS3 (One on the Oracle website, by John Smiley (which did not cover partitioning at all) and one article available after logging in to the Red Hat site and which partially covered partitioning, but I'm wondering if anyone has anything to add on that issue). I was thinking of creating the O/S on a 36GB hardware (via PERC 3/DC) RAID 1 drive set. I was planning on creating /, swap, and /boot as static partitions and /var, /u01, /tmp, and /home as LVM partitions on this same RAID 1 drive set. Further, since the server has 4GB of RAM, I was planning on creating four 2GB swap partitions--one on the O/S RAID 1 drive set, and three on one or more of the 73GB drives, described above. Does this sound like a reasonable layout. Also, how big should I make / ? Should I include any additional partitions or do this some entirely different way? BTW, the production database this server will be running will live on a small SAN.
