Samba 3.0.22 on FC5 - problem.

Hi all!

Having a problem getting my network shares to work. There are two file trees I want set up as shares, but I always end up with the error (using smbclient on the server itself):

tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

I tried setting up a test share using the /tmp directory, and it worked perfectly.

I've tried setting permissions on the two directories I want shared to 777 and set the owner to them as my main login, but that did nothing.

Network:

10.0.0.1/255.0.0.0 - server (omega NetBIOS: Omega)
10.0.0.3/255.0.0.0 - client (WinXP NetBIOS: Alpha)
workgroup: FIXERNET

Firewall:

Firestarter 1.0.3 - trusted hosts 10.0.0.1-3, open ports UDP 137-139 + TCP 139 for hosts 10.0.0.1-3

And before I post up my smb.conf, remember - setting up a share on the /tmp directory worked as it should - it's these other two directories that won't work for some reason.

Never should have bothered changing over to FC5. FC1 worked perfectly. :?

You should allow port 445 (Microsoft DS) when contacting SMB on Windows base...

Even simpler than that!

Fedora Core 5 changed the way security is handled, replacing the standard simple firewall with the (hated) Security Enhanced system.

One simple setting in SELinux: Allow Users to Share Home Directory

Bingo.

If you don't make sure that's set, any directory that bears the user's name can't be shared via SMB.

FC5 has pissed me off so badly that I've stuffed it down to performing nothing more than file serving, replacing its duties with other hardware.

Bad Linux box! No treat!

There's always an alternative and yes, I agree, SE Linux is a pain in the rear.
