no sound + no noatun on a new slack12 install

hello every one,
just installed to the newest slackware12 with its latest default 2.6... kernel hoping in less problems but.... what was i thinking? frustrating really, cos my initial choice of Linux OS to Microsoft OS was speed, manageability and actual OS interaction but it is really proving to be a hard OS to run efficiently on a day-to-day basis (unless IT is your job and all you do is fiddling with PC all/every day!)
anyway, back to the problem, after a fine installation, I noticed that there is no sound and noatun is not even starting or opening any media file - i run 'alsaconf' and everything seems to be in perfect working order i.e. sees my card etc, but no system sounds (which are enabled) work and when I tried to listen to audio files same, nothing! - now is it just me/my machine? or has any one had similar problems?

After you ran alsaconf, did you run alsamixer to set levels? After that, did you run alsactl store to save the changes? Did you turn sound on and up from the kde control center?

hello Dan,
sorry for the delay in replying to your prompt help but work often takes me out of town - anyway, i forgot to mention this on the first request of help: i did run 'alsamixer' and 'alsactl store' after 'alsaconf' and all sound in kde control centre were/are up and on - result: no sound!
the frustrating thing is that I can actually see the graphic equalizer moving as music is playing on amorok but i cant hear the output! tried to listen to music on root account, same result! - what am i doing wrong? or maybe what am I not doing at all? what are issues can be related to sound output?
don't think it's about permission cos there is no sound on my root account either.... and how do i explain noatun not working? broken package? if so, would slapt-get not fix that? i did run slapt-get hoping... but i was wrong!
thanks
