hello everyone,
back again to sort out some stuff on my slack box - i am temporarily at a friend's house and I can't LAN wire my old(ish) laptop, so i have to go wireless (which personally I hate) - I bought a Belkin F5D7050UK Wireless G54 G54 USB Wireless Adaptor and tried to get my fingers dirty on slack unseccessfully - i believe below it's what any expert/engineer needs in ordere to help me out:

I don't run slackware and I run a Belkin F5D 7010 PCMCIA Wireless G Cardbus on a IBM T23 Laptop running AntiX 8. One of the differences I noticed in your lspci readout from mine is mine shows the chipset used inside the PCMCIA card on lspci readout. I see the real tek pci ethernet readout and I am just guessing that is your hard line card. I don't see what chipset your belkin usb wireless is using in your post.

I also noted you are running ndiswrapper. I don't know if that is causing a conflict with a native linux wireless module like the . It looks like the module for your belkin wireless usb is loading. Maybe ndiswrapper is killing it.

I am also not a wireless expert like reed and waterhead when it comes to wireless but I get by for what I run. As far as speed/usability/settings,etc....
I don't run wireless usb . I prefer pcmcia cards for this because it fits deep into
the laptop, is cheaper than usb, less chance of snapping it off in case of droppage, I don't use the pcmcia slots for anything else, and lastly it frees up a usb port for pen drives. I know I am not much help to ya, but I figured I woud reply and bump your thread back to the top. Happy Trails, rokytnji

I didn't know I was a wireless expert! Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm not a Slackware expert at all.

I didn't see ndiswrapper in your lsmod output, which is good. As Roky said, you don't want that running.

I do see two different wireless modules loading, however, the rt73usb and rt2500usb. That might be a problem. They're for different but related chipsets, the RT2501USB and RT2500USB. In my google search, it looks like you want the rt73usb. I would blacklist the other.

This driver also requires firmware. In Debian, the firmware package is called firmware-ralink, but I have no idea how Slackware handles such things.

And I suppose if that doesn't work, you could try the rt2500usb driver afterwards. (Which does not require extra firmware.)

ok changed from USB to PCMCIA buscard (mainly for a space-related reason) and the output of 'lspci' gives me the Atheros AR5007G chipset as network adapter - trying a number of things now which I have found both in this forum and on google - i'll let you know and in the meantime wish me luck

It looks like the wireless is set up and ready to connect.

I understand the Slackware doesn't use NetworkManager to manage network connections. Your best bet is to install the Wicd network connection manager. You can connect to wires/wireless networks easily with it.

Note: I am not sure why you chose to use NDISwrapper. The Atheros wireless chips are well supported in Linux, and would usually load automatically. This would then conflict with NDISwrapper, keeping the wireless from working.

I don't see the Linux driver module loading, so this may not be a problem for you. It does tell me that Slackware lacks some basic Linux wireless drivers! If you choose later to use them, you can install them from the latest source files:

and light it was! - I managed to get it working, but if I had to be specific on the 'how to', I must be honest, I have no idea - I can only throw some hints out there for the more experts, perhaps to work on in the future - first of all no one had mentioned a "/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf" file to write after all the necessary installation and secondly there are loads of lines to be commented and data to be added out in both "/etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf" and "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf" - I followed this helpful article on the internet which is too long to post and and, obviously, I can't post the link because I only have the text copied&pasted on a .txt document as I was unable to actually get connected from my linux box before - so, once you have your modules up and running that's what I did (as far as i can remember)
1) make sure you have the wireless modules included in "/etc/rc.d/rc.modules"

2) make sure that WPA was configured correctly by, first, editing/commenting out the following lines in "/etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf"

3) edit "/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf" so as to enter your SSID and key by:
- running the following command: "wpa_passphrase YOURSSID yourpassphrase" -

and that's it! the magic happened. you gotta love linux

p.s.: do not take this as the gold-standard for wireless set ups, as I probably did not mention other various commands I run along the way to help me in this task, so I wish you good luck!
