Slackware rocks! But I have a small problem... :-/

...as my Dell OEM DVD/CD-RW isn't recognized at all. What I could find out about it (back in the Winbloze days) is that its number (or "name") is HL-DT-ST GCC-4480B 16x48x40x DVD/CD-RW. Before Linux was installed it was recognized by XP as an "E:" drive, with "D:" being my regular read-only CD-ROM.

It's installed on a standard Dell Dimension 8300, i875 motherboard (Dell propietary crap), Intel Pentium 4C 2.6GHz, 512MB RAM, ATI (!) Radeon 9800 Pro, and Audigy SoundBlaster 2. O.S. is Slackware of course with the 2.4 stock Kernel. I'm a complete n00b to Linux, and I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Overall I'm very glad to have installed Slackware though, after many, many years on M$ Winbloze (since the 3.1 days), I knew that this year it was definitely over. No more false promises by Redmond. They can keep their stinking LongWait to themselves.

if you are using the stock kernel you need to add hdc=ide-scsi in your bootloader (most likely lilo). Should be under /etc/lilo.conf

Hmm... I can't seem to find anything under /etc named LILO, and I know I installed it (or can only root see it?). Everytime my PC boots LILO asks me what I want to boot (even though Linux is the only O.S. installed). So it must be there, but I can't find it.

Have you checked dmesg to see if it says anything?

no you should be able to see it as a normal user (just not change it). that is very odd.....

dmesg tells you all the things you would see on startup. If your drive is detected, it will be shown there. The command for dmesg is dmesg, though you may want to pipe it to more or less to keep it from scrolling away from you.

That's what it says when I type "dmesg". Plus something about my keyboard (too many nacks? - but it works just fine).
