I just installed Slackware today using GNOME as the GUI. During setup I went full install for complete package... In this case, I happened to use the installation tut. at http://www.bitbenderforums.com/vb22/...?postid=311808 and partitioned my drives accordingly. Instead of going KDE, however, I decided to go GNOME. My sound card and network is set up fine and I have my account working well. Logging in as root is not a problem. Other commands also seem to work fine. When I attempt to leave command line by using startx, it comes up with fatal errors. Am I using the wrong start code or are there files missing? Could it be that my Virtual Memory is set to low? Im running 768Megs out of an accepted gig, so It's not a RAM problem... Any help would be appreciated.

I don't mean to steal the thread but I am having a similar problem. I cannot get startx to run successfully. It may be my setup since I am new at this. This is the dump that it gives me when I try to run startx at the command prompt. Sorry it's so long:

it seems that it's seeing your videoram as 256KB, this is very low as 65536KB is 64MB, try checking your bios settings to see what it's defined the videocard as, you might need to update your bios

you might need to make lilo aware that you have that much memory, you could add append="mem=768M" to lilo.conf and then run lilo to update the mbr, if this fails to achieve anything then it's almost certainly not a ram problem.
maybe something more obvious will show up once we see your X log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log

at this point i would simply edit the xorg.conf file usualy in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and check that the mouuse is setup correctly and that in the server section that the correct mouse is listed see the xorg.conf.example
