Hi,

I have slack 10 installed and need to know how to turn off the terrible screeching noises that my external serial modem makes when dialling up to the internet. It is completely silent under Windows.

what dialer do you use? kppp has a configure tab that allows you to turn the noise off.

What needs to be done is for ATM0L0 (zeroes note Ohs) to be sent to the modem in the init string. And while you're at it, you can add a W2 to get the correct connect speed returned to you (.ie ATM0L0W2, then ATDT and whatever your ISP's phone number is. To be honest I usualy do a ATZ, to reset the modem first).

I haven't got KDE installed by the way, so I configured the modem with pppsetup.

I think that it uses /etc/wvdial.conf

If you are using pppsetup then when it asks you for extra modem commands type ATM0L0 OK. Pppsetup asks for this in the fifth dialog. You could also modify /etc/ppp/pppscript

I solved the problem by modifying the file /etc/ppp/pppscript with the string suggested above. Peace at last!
