It shouldn't make a difference, but on the second slackware cd, under /testing/packages/linux-2.6.10 there is an alsa package. You can just It worked for me

Does lsmod show a snd-intel8x0m driver ? If so then try to add the snd-intel8x0m driver to the hotplug blacklist if it is not already there. Your soundcard is probably your second sound device and alsa tools are defaulting to the first sounddevice without parameters.

lsmod doesnt show upy intel sound device - a part from:
Module Size Used by
snd_mixer_oss 17440 -

I have just finished to uninstall all ALSA packages + utils +libs and about to reinstall them - I'll let you know how it goes!

well... as usual, it didnt go very well, in fact it still doesnt work, ehehe - well i guess thats it now! - going bto the previous kernel and will try agan whnnmaybe they release a more 'bug-less' kernel, LOL - thanx to ALL

hello everyone again, back with some good news!

I did realize that the sound it's probably always been there, in fact I casually logged in as root and by magic all sounds appeared - obviously (i guess) the problem now is about permission but i tried to 'chmod 666 /dev/dsp' and that's the msg i got back:
chmod: cannot access `/dev/dsp': No such file or directory

I also noticed that perhaps (with all the new ALSA thing) what was /dev/dsp is now /dev/snd but even changing permission to that won't give me any sound when i'm logged in as user

any idea?

no i wasn't! but i added myself and still no luck - plus...
if I 'chmod 777 /dev/audio'
fi 'no such file or directory'

and same with /dev/mixer or /dev/dsp

but i must admit it was a great imporvement at least to have sound as root - so i guess that i'll watch my dvds as root!
