NO sound on kerne-l2.6 with KDE-3.4.1

I was really excited and happy when after several months of no sound on slack10.1 I upgraded to the new linux kernel-2.6.which ( i was told) would have resolved all my problems with sound - In fact it did!!! it was marvellous, I even had all sysem sound on!!! after a few days that 'miracolous event' I decided to also upgrade KDE-3.3 to KDE-3.4.1 and guess what? NO MORE SOUND again! now I found this funny and that's why I'm dedicating a few more lines to let you know what happened -

anyway, the real reason of my post is to know whether anyone has encountered the same or a similar problem and resolved it somehow - i read that KDE-3.4.1 uses the AGPART sound system and the new kernel-2.6 uses ALSA as defualt buit-in modules - what's happening? I thought that ALSA could emulate all the other linux soiund systems - how can i get my sound back? I even upgraded to the latest ALSA package (ALSA 1.0.9)

by the way, I did not load any OOS (open sound system) drivers/modules as per default, eventhough I also tried to re-build the kernel with OSS modules ON and nothing changed - did I miss something building the kernel originally? any other module/s that I should have selected?

thank you for any suggestions

first thing I would do, if you haven't already done it, is re-run alsaconf and alsamixer

I did run 'alsamixer' and everything is unmuted and all volumes are up - with regards to 'alsaconf' it says that no supported PnP or PCI cards have been found - does it mean that my hardware is not compatible? and that I should get back to the old OSS modules? - but why did this happen only after I upgraded to KDE-3.4? the sound card was well recognized before ....

Make sure that you have the modules you need for your sound card installed
check your dmesg, lspci &
cat /lib/modules/2.6.x.x/modules.dep | grep sound
- I say this because of the alsoconf part.

Also its possible that KDE is trying to use a different sound device, make sure that /dev/mixer is present.

Im not an expert but this is what I would check first.

about to give up on this - i have tried everything that it's been suggested here and more but still no sound - wondering if it is about time to think of going back to the old kernel - i liked this though, very fast at boot up, nice and friendly, but ....... -

one more try!
this is my dmesg:

now i dont want to look like a lazy bum who is putting the files on the net and saying: do it for me!!! - I have tried everything so if anyone sees anything wrong in it pls let me know, and i'll be very thankful if not i'll get back to kernel2.4 - by the way '/dev/mixer' is there

thanx

p.s.: that strange and weird error message on dmesg only apperead when i compiled the sound OSS_EMUL as a module - it wont give the messagI build in to the kernel

Try reinstalling the ALSA driver (or get the upgraded one for the new kernel). I had the same issue when I first upgraded my kernel. All I had to do was reinstall the alsa driver. Yes, I know that the 2.6 kernel compiles a module for this, however the only way I was able to get my sound working (before I installed kernel 2.6.11) was to reinstall the alsa driver.

Regards,

sorry one more thing - i have just realized that my /etc/modules.conf looks like this:

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.8 ---
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

which is slightly different from other /etc/modules.conf i have seen before - could that be the problem?

I upgraded with 'swaret --upgrade ALSA' - so the answer to your question is NO, I guess it upgraded from the ALSA site
