OK, let me start off with hardware. I believe my problem is with the USB keyboard.

USB Keyboard
USB Mouse
SATA Hard Drive (no RAID)

I have a full slackware install. I got past usb detection here with nousb as a parameter. If I tried installing with usb detection, it would hang on detecting USB devices. I waited a good 30 minutes on this.

Install went good, then during boot, hotplugging detection hangs. I used prameter nohotpluging. This allowed me to log in, make a new user and such.

Now I tried to start KDE, but it does not detect my keyboard or mouse, and so it fails.

I really would like to continue using my usb keyboard, the mouse can be changed to PS/2 if required. This setup is stable in windows, whereas a PS/2 mouse sometimes turns off the keyboard for some reason...

I am completely new to linux and think I have gotten pretty far on this for my experience, but I just can't find a solution. How can I get this working?

do you have a BIOS that requires you to define if you have a USB keyboard?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I didnt have to make any additional changes to bios to be able to use the KB in both the install process, lilo, and bios themselves.

Let me get my USB related bios settings for ya. Prepare for edit...

EDIT:

Plug and Play O/S: No
USB 1.1 and USB 2.0: Enabled
Legacy USB support: Enabled
Stop EHCI HC in OHCI handover: Enabled
USB 2.0 controller mode: hispeed
USB devices detected: 1 USB Keyboard, 1 USB Mouse

EDIT2:

Edited all USB related settings in bios and attempted booting without nohotplugging and still hangs on hotplugging. Will try with nohotplugging soon.

This is the dialogue that shows up when attempting to start KDE. (the hostname is collosus)

edit your xorg.conf: replace /dev/mouse with /dev/input/mice or evdev
