I think the problem is that the root partition is mounted as a temporary file system (tmpfs).
In order to modify a file you have to modify it in the /mnt/hdaX directory.

I think you can change your fstab file /mnt/hdaX/etc/fstab for removing the :
"tmpfs / tmpfs" line.
