That's never going to work plugging a guitar directly into a sound card. You need a mixer or DI box (but you already seem to know that) so I'm not sure why you don't just use one! Does the Audigy breakout box provide this functionality?

I have a nice little Behringer that does the trick rather nicely. It even has mic preamps. My soundcard is an Maudo Deltat 1010LT and it absolutely rocks. It's really nice to havce so many ins/outs. I have some smaller speakers connected as well as a 350W amp and some larger speakers.

I use all the same software you have mentioned with the addition of Jamin for mastering, jack-rack for effects & patchage for a patchbay (qjackctl is just too ugly and weird). Currently I'm running Debian but I am at this very moment building a new realtime kernel for Slackware. I would highly recommend using Ingo's realtime patch if you want a serious recording studio.

If you're interested, the patch is here:

Hi.I have recorded in a studio that had a box with a soundblaster card in it.The mic input had a 20db booster that has to be turned on using alsamixer. Also the sound was a bit fizzy sounding and I had to go thru a mesa boogie pedal that the enginer used to adjust the sound before it comes into the sound card. After a bit of knob twiddeling I had a great sound.Obviously you dont have to use a mesa boogie pedal but any thing with its own volume control on it..An EQ pedal would be ideal. The key seems to be getting the right balance between the mic input level and the pedals output level.Does the card have a seperate input rather than a mic?The impedence is different for a mic and an electric instrument.Good luck.
