    using slackware 12
    just wanted to ask how would you know the kind of kernel
    you system using.
    or is it really essential to update kernel
    even if i am using the latest kernel

    i mean recompiling

    2 gb ram

    That will tell you which kernel you're currently using.

    With some kernels there are security updates that are important to get (especially if you are running any sort of server), but for most purposes, it's fine to stick with your current kernel if you're happy with it.

    it depends, some times you have to update your kernel version for particular purpose , let's say better hardware support ,or security update , but in principle the default Slack kernel 2.6.21.5 is more than enough .
