    I completly forgot about this thread.. thanks operator for bringing it back up.

    I opened up the .xinitrc file in my home folder, and it doesn't have anywhere for me really to add anything. Nothing intuitive at least.

    it looks to me that you have opened a log file rathenr than the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file - first of all let me tell you that I'm on slack10 (I don't know what distro you are running) - anyway, if you too are on slack10, open the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and make sure that you have the something like the one below - that's the full section from start to end so you can actually copy and paste it on ur /etc/X11/xorg.conf - IMPORTANT: make a backup copy of your original file just in case - good luck

    Nope.. no matter what, my system thinks that my other buttons are pointers.

    xmodmap has it configured correctly, but it still doesn't work. I have the xorg.conf file setup correctly. I still have no clue what I am doing wrong!

    How many buttons do you have? You should tell it, in your config file since it is autodetecting 3. You also asked how to edit your ~/.xinitrc so I'll post that as well

    My mouse isn't USB. Well, it is, but it's not. I have a KVM, but it doesn't have USB support, just PS/2, so I picked up a converter, so it converts USB to PS/2. So, I don't need all the other stuff, on the USB drivers and such, right?

    My mouse has 8 buttons, however one is to pop up a menu of all my open programs, and it has never worked without the logitech software, so I don't use that function. Does that mean I am going to need to configure it differently?

    If I use any of the buttons, other than the middle one [the scroll is different, but the actual selection thing is what works], but all of them move the mouse, like about 1-3" on my screen, so obviously the system thinks the buttons are pointers.

    I'm going to screw around with it tonight, and tomorrow. I only have a half day at school tomorrow, so I have a little extra time. I'll see what I can come up with.

    You probably will need some software to configure the other buttons. Some programs may not require it. (Mozilla Firefox uses my side mouse buttons for forward/back, I didn't have to change any settings)

    When my X server autodetecting my mouse having 3 buttons, if I pressed them, it would move the cursor. After I found out the correct protocol, and set the number of buttons manually, pressing buttons do not move the cursor. (The mouse wheel will scroll)

    Setting the correct protocol, and the number of buttons should fix your problem.

    After screwing around with the xorg.conf file, more than I would have liked, I came up with what works. For the Logitech MX700 mouse, running under the PS/2 port.. this is what makes everything work flawlessly.
