Needs NVidia Assistance!
Greetings!
I recently took the plunge into complete Linux-ism away from Microsnot, and I need a little help.
I am running Slack 10, NVidia 5200, and SB Live! card. I am fairly familiar with linux, but I am just now diving into the hardware configuration of things. Anyway, while installing drivers for nvidia, the directions mention that I need to recompile my kernel. Well, this would be my first attempt at a compile, so you can imagine my discomfort.
Anyway, has anyone done this successfully, and can you give me some pointers? Again, I am very capable in linux, I have not been focusing on hardware, but software. Thanks in advance for your time!

You shouldn't need to recompile to add nvidia drivers to a slack 10 installation.
Why do you say you need to recompile?

Here is an awesome link that should answer you NVidia and Recompile question.

This was written in the slack 9.1 but I did it to my 10 and everything was great.
Good Luck

No recompile?
Hmmm. Well, after I run the .run file, i changed the x.org config file. What else do I need to do?
I haven't fired it up yet, as I am working on it from work... I will test it when I get home. I will post any errors that I get....
TIA

Ok, here is where I got the kernel recompile thing (from nvidia README):
" If no matching precompiled kernel interface is found, then the installer
will compile the kernel interface for you. However, first it will
check that you have the correct kernel headers intalled on your system.
If the installer must compile the kernel interface, then you must install
the kernel-sources package for your kernel. "
Is this not kernel recompile? The installer had to compile a kernel interface.

The standard slack install will leave the kernel headers on the filesystem. Installation of the drivers will use those. You shouldn't have any probs installing.

Just say "yes" then it will be autoamically done in 10 seconds. You need not recompile your kernel. Its not like that you think.

Whoo Hoo!!
It works great!
Thanks for the help! I would still like to learn how to recompile, though. Any suggestions?
