Configure a wireless connection on a Dell XPS laptop?
Hello Linux Experts,
I've loaded out Linux Slackware 12.2 on my Dell laptop; it is configured as a dual bootable machine "Windows" & "Slackware Linux". Everything works great except for the wireless Internet connection on the Linux side. I'm a newbie and I admit I'm lost right now; would someone be so kind and break down the procedure in basic steps what to do to get it up and running. The basic hardware components of the laptop is listed below:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (3MB cache/2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB)
4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz (2 Dimms)
NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M - 256MB
320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-bit
Slot Load DVD+/-RW (DVD/CD read/write)
High Definition Audio 2.0
Dell Wireless 1510 802.11n Half Mini-Card
I'll appreciate any type of quality assistance to get the wireless connection up and running.

To add to jay512s excellent advice, Slackware is a much more "hands on" distro and requires more command line configuration than others. The file you'll need to configure once you know what configuration gets you online is in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf. Open this file with an editor... I suppose "kate" is still available in Slackware so it'd be:
...to become "su." It'll ask for password. Type it in and press enter. Then:Code:su
... to open this file. If kate isn't on your machine, you can also open it from the command line using the "joe" editor...Code:kate /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf
Hope this also helps...Code:joe /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf

Output From Linux Commands
First of all,
Thanks JayD512
Here's the output I received from the commands that you told me to run. Hopefully, it helps to sort out my wireless situation.

I see your wireless card is being detected properly. But you neglected one of the commands

Open a terminal and execute
Post back with the output.Code:lsmod

Looks like you just need to install the firmware for your wireless.
It's going to be the b43 firmware. Check out this page for instructions on how to go about it.
b43 - Linux Wireless
If any part of it gives you an issue, just post back

I think is the firmware just as jayd512 posted but also use the wicd for managing the wireless I had the same issue with slack 12.1 (inspiron 6400) and i used wicd and it is working.
I hope it will help you.
