cant get wireless to work in slack 13
Guess this is not a new problem... I have been looking around on the net and tried a few things, none that really changed anything.
So I installed slackware 13 on my laptop. i am kind of newbeish, but i do know a little of linux.
the wpa_gui in kde 4.something says "could not get status from wpa_supplicant"
also, iwconfig says lo no wireless connections and eth0 no wireless connections...
any ideas? all help is greatly appreciated!

I don't do any wireless at all so can't offer any specific help, but check this wireless guide if you haven't done so already for some steps to get you started:

hey and thanks...
tried installing the driver from broadcoms homepage, guess i did something sightly right, but not right enough...
earlier, it always said that lo, eth0 and eth1 had no connections and iwlist scanning said that nothing could be scanned.
now it says like this:
you see the essid zork? thats my wireless....Code:last 3 lines of dmesg: eth1 (wl): not using net_device_ops yet lib80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'TKIP' eth1: Broadcom BCM4311 802.11 Wireless Controller 5.10.91.9 iwconfig: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. irda0 no wireless extensions. eth1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"" Nickname:"" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power:32 dBm Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Managementmode:All packets received Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=0 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 iwlist scanning: lo Interface doesn't support scanning. eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning. irda0 Interface doesn't support scanning. eth1 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: 00:90:D0:FC:C5:93 ESSID:"TN_private_C0430C" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1) Quality:4/5 Signal level:-66 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s Cell 02 - Address: 00:13:49:F8:C6:9D ESSID:"zork" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Quality:5/5 Signal level:-51 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Cell 03 - Address: 00:19:5B:DE:E0:D4 ESSID:"dlink" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Quality:3/5 Signal level:-69 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm Encryption key:off Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s
anyway, the wpa_qui still says no to status from wpa_supplicant. so any ideas what the next step here could be to get it to work?
PS: this is the closest i have been to get wireless to work. i have tried in on and off for 2 years
. my wife always complains about me messing up the computer for nothing since i always go back to windows, please help me get her quiet this time

Wireless problems... this is a classic. I recently installed Slackware 13.0. Got broadcom drivers, played around with /etc/rc.d/inet1.conf for a few days but nothing seemed to work. Being desperate, I installed windows 7. After a few minutes of surfing I went back to slackware and somehow my wireless was working.
Try installing wicd it might help or post your /etc/rc.d/inet1.conf file

Hi, I am currently running Slackware 13.0 x86_64 and my Wireless works. It took me a day or two to get this right.
What you can try is this:
wpa_supplicant more or less allows you to connect to a wireless access point, wpa_supplicant.conf is it's configuration file that tells wpa_supplicant what ESSID to try and connect to, what the encryption type is for the router and what the key is for the router if it's secure.Code:man wpa_supplicant man wpa_supplicant.conf
As an example here is my wpa_supplicant.conf and my iwlist scan
# See /usr/doc/wpa_supplicant-0.6.9/wpa_supplicant.conf.sampleCode:wlan0 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: 00:23:69:57:6C:FB ESSID:"Raiders" Mode:Master Channel:1 Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1) Quality=100/100 Signal level:-48 dBm Encryption key:on IE: Unknown: 000752616964657273 IE: Unknown: 010882840B162430486C IE: Unknown: 030101 IE: Unknown: 2A0100 IE: Unknown: 2F0100 IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : CCMP TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: Unknown: 32040C121860 IE: Unknown: DD6F0050F204104A00011010440001021041000100103B000103104700101919B15F6F52898B6D37FCDF9E70168A102100074C696E6B737973102300075752543136304E102400063132333435361042000234321054000800060050F2040001101100075752543136304E100800020084 IE: Unknown: DD090010180203F4050000 IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : CCMP TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: Unknown: DD180050F2020101000003A4000027A4000042435E0062322F00 Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s Extra:tsf=0000007b5a746186 Extra: Last beacon: 64ms ago
# for many more options that you can use in this file.
You can obtain your PSK by typingCode:# This line enables the use of wpa_cli which is used by rc.wireless # if possible (to check for successful association) ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant # By default, only root (group 0) may use wpa_cli ctrl_interface_group=0 eapol_version=1 ap_scan=1 fast_reauth=1 #country=US # WPA protected network, supply your own ESSID and WPAPSK here: network={ scan_ssid=0 ssid="<your ssid here>" proto=WPA RSN key_mgmt=WPA-PSK pairwise=CCMP TKIP group=CCMP TKIP WEP104 WEP40 psk=<your password key here> priority=10 } # Plaintext connection (no WPA, no IEEE 802.1X), # nice for hotel/airport types of WiFi network. network={ key_mgmt=NONE priority=0 }
Like my key to the router was something like: 7ABC4KJLCode:wpa_passphrase <essid> <normal key>
and it came up with a 64 character string.
After you get your computer configured run as root:
This will run wpa_supplicant in the foreground and tell you if you have any configuration settings wrong.Code:wpa_supplicant -i<interface> -c<path-to-wpa_supplicant.conf> -Dwext -i is the interface flag -c is the configuration file flag -D is the device driver flag, wext is the generic driver and works with most cards
THEN you can either launch wpa_gui and hit the connect button or you can open up a new terminal and dhcpcd <interface>.
This is how I get my wireless to work, after I had it all figured out I put these lines into /etc/rc.d/rc.local
I hope this helps and is easy to understand. I have a hard time conveying my thoughts to words.Code:echo "Starting wpa_supplicant..." if [ -x /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant ]; then /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -B -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext fi echo "Running dhcpcd on wlan0" if [ -x /sbin/dhcpcd ]; then /sbin/dhcpcd wlan0 fi NOTE: the -B flag in wpa_supplicant makes it run in the background
