Installing newest version of Seamonkey, uninstall old first?

I tried to compile and install seamonky 2.0.8 according to instructions found on this site.
I got to the dot forward slash configure, and nothing happened. It didn't complain about anything. It just sit there in the terminal and did nothing. No configure. I'm using SeaMonkey 2.0.8 right now, to post this, but it wasn't installed. I'm running if from my home directory. I'll show you the terminal printout:

the dot forward slash seamonkey brought it up and I'm using it. But the three steps which usually follow:
-Configure the installation
-Compile the software
-Install the binaries
didn't happen. You can see from the printout that I was in the correct directory.
Why didn't it configure, compile, and install as it should have? What dumb thing did I do wrong?
Yes, I read the readme file. It says:
Installation Instructions

Note that the installation instructions use the bash shell. If you're not
using bash, adjust the commands accordingly.

Install into a clean (new) directory.
Installing on top of previously released builds may cause problems.

Installation Instructions
-------------------------------

Note: There is no installer available, but just extracting the tar.bz2
to the default directory (usually /usr/local/seamonkey) achieves the
same result as an installer would.

To install SeaMonkey by downloading the tar.bz2 file:

1. Create a directory named "seamonkey" (mkdir seamonkey) and change
to that directory (cd seamonkey).

2. Click the link on the site you're downloading SeaMonkey from to
download the package (seamonkey*.tar.bz2) file into the seamonkey
directory.

3. Change to the seamonkey directory (cd seamonkey) and decompress the
file with the following command:

tar jxvf sea*.tar.bz2

This creates a "seamonkey" directory under your seamonkey directory.

4. Change to the seamonkey directory (cd seamonkey).

To hook up SeaMonkey complete with icon to the GNOME Panel,
follow these steps:

1. Click the GNOME Main Menu button, open the Panel menu, and then open
the Add to Panel submenu and choose Launcher.

2. Right-click the icon for SeaMonkey on the Panel and enter the
following command:

directory_name./seamonkey

where directory_name is the name of the directory you downloaded
SeaMonkey to. For example, the default directory that SeaMonkey
suggests is /usr/local/seamonkey.

3. Type in a name for the icon, and type in a comment if you wish.

4. Click the icon button and type in the following as the icon's location:

directory_name/chrome/icons/default/default.png

where directory_name is the directory where you installed SeaMonkey.
For example, the default directory is
/usr/local/seamonkey/chrome/icons/default/default.png.
****** /usr/local/seamonkey is not where it is located in Slackware. Seamonkey is in:
/usr/lib/seamonkey. Should I have put the dot tar file there to try and compile and install this?
I'm happy I can run the new version, but it's not properly compiled and installed. I would like to learn to do this the right way. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried to compile and install seamonky 2.0.8 according to instructions found on this site.

Ah, you've found our trinity: configure, compile, install

This is what you use to get (human readable) sourcecode into machine executable binary form.

But the folks at Mozilla, they do distribute source code, but you've downloaded pre-compiled binaries.

As you've already found, you can just cd into the seamonkey directory and run ./seamonkey... it effect, it's already installed. Now all you need to do is move that directory to a logical place so you keep a clean system.
In Slackware /usr/lib is that place. So if you move it like this:

mv /home/sandy/Downloads/seamonkey /usr/lib/seamonkey-2.0.8

Then the directory is in the right place. Now all you need is something to point at it, so that when you say 'seamonkey' that the system will know what you're talking about. There's more ways than one, but for the Mozilla software conventionally we do this:

ln -sf /usr/lib/seamonkey-2.0.8/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey

The reason this all works a bit differently with Mozilla software like Seamonkey, Firefox and Thunderbird is that historically they make software for Windows, which due to it's open source nature has been ported to Linux.

The ./configure command is not some magical command that will auto-configure anything it thinks you want configured. It's a script that is often included with the source. You should be able to see it in the directory. You can read it, and even edit it (unrecommended). it sets up the MakeFiles that `make` will need.
If you intend to do this a lot, it'll be worth your effort to read `man makepkg`, this will give you an extra step to perform but with that you'll create your own Slackware packages from source, so you can manage them with the Slackware specific installpkg, removepkg and pkgtool.
