Your network card isn't at all uncommon, so it should be supported out-of-the-box.
What version of Slack did you install? And what kernel is it?
Code:cat /etc/slackware-version uname -r

When I did the setup there was a network section. I entered a domain name, and then cancelled when it asked for the domain name. Do you think that's the problem?

grasping at straws here but do you think using kde as my default windows manager will help? Switching to KDE from the fluxbox menu doesn't help.

This is a network problem and has nothing to do with which DE/WM is in use. Install wicd and use that to configure your network, you may find it easier to deal with than the init scripts.

Open your terminal. As root, do:
Code:/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart
Code:/sbin/ifconfig -a

So can I assume that it worked?
