as far as i know , first thing u need is a x86_64 compiler, after that u can compile ur kernel as x86_64, and then u can use 64bit drivers

recompiles
I have done it using a base install of Slackware (very low stuff) I then recompiled the kernel with the x86-64 flags on gcc. Once that was done I started progressing through and compiling and other aspects of the OS that I could. Once that was done I then built from the source packages all of the packages I needed for x86-64.
I hope that the Slackware team (Patrick) choose to release a x86-64 release out of the box.
