    Using xfce in slackware i try to adjust the volume but when I touch it the volume immediately (1-2 seconds) drops back to zero %. No sound, though. Whats going on? Any Ideas?

    that means your sound card is not setup properly. Try
    Code:
    alsaconf
    to setup your soundcard, then
    Code:
    alsamixer
    to change the volumes
