Did you try to run "xorgconfig" yet? And put all of your info in there.

First of all, how to I copy all that text.

Second of all, the card is an nVidia ST Riva 1282x board. I tried running the nVidia install that shilo.is-a-geek.com recommends, but I get problems with that.

I dunno if it will be of much help, but I had that exact same problem with xorg and xfree86, and it turns out the problem was an incompatible monitor (which I discovered by hooking up a borrowed monitor to troubleshoot) . It didn't matter which distro I ran, whenever direct rendering turned on my display blacked out but the computer was still running and the box was still addressable via ssh. I lived without opengl or dri for a while, until I was in the market for a new flat panel. I know this probably isn't the answer you want to hear

Have you tried booting with knoppix? You can just copy over and rename the xfree86 config file it generates (although it never seems to get dri working) and it will at least help narrow down the problem if it boots no problem. It rocks, too...the knoppix hd install was my main distro for the longest time.

See, I had Slackware running on this monitor before, and I had 2.6.11 running also. So, I think the monitor is ok...
