CUPS Install

Ok; a few dumb newbie questions before I try this.
When removing a package; do I need to be in that Directory? I tried to

removepkg lprng;removepkg apsfilter
and it could not find the directory.

I did and it seems it did not put a "D" at the beggining of the permissions ??
chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/rc.cups

i got no directory when i tried
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start

I have the instructions, i must be missing something simple.

You just have to be root to remove packages. Regularly installed packages will be 'known' by pkgtools, so it will be able to track them down when you want to remove them.

What do you mean by 'D at the beginning of the permissions'?

and /etc/rc.d/rc.cups start will start the cups service...

First of all, do an # updatedb, and afterwards $ locate rc.cups. Check in the results if the file you're looking for is in there.

"D" for directory when you are looking at the permissions.
i was in as root; maybe I typed it wrong
I was reading right off the instructions.

What do you need about directories? Change to a directory or change the settings on a directory?

Changing ownership is done like this:
# chown [your username] /etc/rc.d/

Changing permissions of system directories is not recommended though. Normally the default permissions will work fine.

Just do i need to be in that directory to REMOVE a package or install cups; for example.
since i got "no directory found" but i browse to it and its there
i swear i thought i typed it right, as it sounds like nothing else is afooot.

Not at all - as I said, pkgtools keeps track of the installed .tgz packages.They are installed in default directories.

How are you suing into root? Try $ su - instead of just $ su.

Can you put the stuff from the terminal here? Your commands, and their output.

I think that's pretty easy. It's not installed. Just fire up pkgtool, and select 'remove packages' - it will create a list of everything that's installed on your system. Then you should check if cups and stuff like that is amongst it.

Possible also you're checking for packages that don't exist - I mean, you might be using the wrong names, of course, removepkg won't find them then.

not slackware specific; can anyone tell me the slackware equivalent of this?
my printer was listed so thats a little progress.
i unpacked the driver and then did a ./configure i got this error.

configure: error: cannot find net-snmp support (or --disable-network-build)

can i just turn this off? i am ona network with my dad; like 2 feet away but he's got his own printer
i have been wading thru this for over a week now.
